Summary: Soldier Colin arrives in 'the new world' and finds savage tribes there... but what does a white boy have to do with the 'indians'?

The opening was a huge success. After their lovemaking it seemed like both Colin and Jared had renewed energy and set everything up. Jared had sat on his knees to polish the hardwooden floor, which of course made Colin stop his work to look at his lovers butt. In the end however, he quit staring and moved on. With a few paper flags, a huge welcome mat and large grins on their faces, they stood waiting for their first customers.

Jared turned around towards Colin and smiled.

“You have this huge fucking grin on your face, it’s unbelievable.” He grinned himself, but he didn’t know that. They hugged tightly right before the doors opened to welcome the people in.

“Colin, I love what you have done with the place!” A woman burst in and hugged Colin to her chest, almost smothering him in the motion. Although Jared had no idea who she was, he wasn’t about to get jealous. Colin did have a life here and it was normal that he knew some people here. Otherwise his business would probably fail.

“Senora Gabriela! How are you? I haven’t seen you in years!” Colin laughed and tried to get a bit away from her, so that he could at least breathe. Quickly getting away from the woman he found new and old acquaintances all around the place, happy about the coming of several of them. He just hoped that they would continue to come over, even after the opening.

Jared stood behind the bar and served the waiters with beer and wine, whatever was at hand at that moment. He had to continuously run from the basement to the bar and the other way around, because he was constantly running out of servings. People didn’t complain, because it was always the case in a new business that things went a bit messy. They were talking, in good company and weren’t demanding.

Colin tried to help Jared, but in the end he was almost always occupied with talking to his guest, like a good host should. Jared was not mad it him for it, but he realised that it would be difficult to run this business with just the two of them, which they should do if they wanted to make any kind of money.

Hours later, when they could finally close the door behind the last guest, Colin realised that Christian hadn’t shown his face for the entire evening. For some reason that irked him a little, but perhaps the other had other things on his mind.

“Are you alright, love?” Colin asked Jared when he came behind the bar, watching for a moment how Jared washed the earthen pots and jars where the guests had finished their drink. The young man looked up and gave a tired smile before working on. The day after they had to open on normal hours and everything needed to be ready, they were in for a few hard years before they could return to his home.

“Let me help you.” Colin said as he took a cloth and went to the various tables, wiping them and bringing on even more jars and pints, setting chairs right and taking a broom to wipe the floor as best as he could. After a little more than an hour they were far ready, although some tables were still not how they should be and not everything clean.

“We’ll do that in the morning. Right now I need some sleep. And I think you can use some as well, right?” Colin asked Jared.

“Yeah… it’s been a long night.”

“Not so long as it could have been.”

The familiar voice brought them both back to the present, looking up at the man right in front of them. Christian’s face didn’t stand all too friendly and Jared began to truly fear him. He could expose the both of them to the entire city. It would not be good for either Jared or Colin.

“You don’t think I’ll let you get away with this, right? Bringing this heap up to standard and earning money that should have been mine? I think I’ll tell the newspaper what interesting things I’ve seen here tonight, how lovey-dovey you two were going on.”

Colin was not too impressed with his former friend, he had seen worse. “And they aren’t going to find anything in here, because there isn’t anything to tell. Get out of here, Christian, before I’ll do something I’ll regret.”

“Just you fucking wait!” Christian grumbled under his breath before he left the establishment. Colin quickly closed the door behind him and looked up at Jared, who was trembling from what he had heard the other say.

“He is going to give the business a bad name, Colin, I’m sure of it. Even if they can’t find real evidence, they’ll get something else.” Jared hesitated a little and sighed. “It’s best if I left from here so that you can continue to earn money, we…”

Colin didn’t let his lover continue and silenced him with a finger to his lips. “You will not go away from here, not for Christian or anyone else. We have gone through too much together for you to go away now that it is going well. You will not leave, you hear me?”

“Colin, listen to me!” Jared growled under his breath. This was always so frustrating to him, when Colin didn’t listen to a word he said.
“I must go for now, so that you can earn money for the both of us to go home. Find me a decent place to stay nearby and perhaps a small job so that I can make enough money to fend for my own. Christian wouldn’t have a leg to stand on with his accusations, we can still see each other and… we’ll get closer to our goal this way.”

Colin still didn’t like it, but Jared had a point. With a small nod he agreed with the plan.

“Tomorrow we’ll start searching for a new house for you to live in, right now I just want to get some sleep.” Colin sighed before he just went upstairs without looking back at Jared. The former slave didn’t know what to do at first, but said to himself that he was not going to let Colin put him down because he had a good idea. He followed Colin towards their bedroom, where he found his lover on his side of the bed, with his back turned to the door.

“Do you think it’s such a bad idea?” Jared asked, crossing his arms over his chest. He was quite sure that Colin was still awake and just too stubborn to talk to him. Indeed only silence was his answer.

“Come on, Colin, I’m trying to do the right thing here, right for the both of us. I don’t want you to have to leave your business behind.” And I want to go home, he added for himself in silence.

“Why do we have to make sacrifices for something that should be normal?” Colin murmured softly as he turned so that Jared could see him again.

“Because that is the way the world works.” Jared answered as he sat down next to Colin. “It might not be how we want it to be, but maybe we can turn it into our own little world afterwards. That’s why I want to do this… and that should be your reason too.”

“I’ll work twice as hard to get you home sooner. I want us to be together.” Colin nodded as he tried to see reason. It was difficult however, seeing how much he cared for the man beside him. Colin pulled Jared to the bed and gave him a gentle kiss.

“We should sleep, tomorrow is going to be a big day for you, when we find you a place to stay that is.”

“We will… You know plenty of people in this town.” Jared smiled in answer before they both snuggled closely together and soon fell asleep.

Morning came far too soon and both men were still half asleep when the first light seeped through the curtains. Jared groaned loudly as he stretched, wakening Colin who was still fast asleep beside him.

“What are you doing, it’s far too early…” Colin yawned. “Everyone is still asleep.”

“You know that’s not true. Come on, we should be out there finding me a place to stay! Afterwards I’ll come and help you with opening the bar. Get up!” Jared poked and shoved at Colin until the younger man gave in and stood, stretching himself and putting on his clothes from the evening before.

“Can’t I even have breakfast before we leave? Or are you merciful enough to let me at least have that?” Colin asked with a wink as Jared nodded gravely. Not that they had much to eat as breakfast, but Colin managed to find something eatable on the way out, quickly grabbing his coat before he got shoved out the door by Jared.

“Where do you want to start searching?” Jared asked, he seemed enthusiastic and this didn’t make Colin happy at all. He frowned and grumbled something under his breath. He did not even know where he could ask for Jared to rent a room. They needed something that would be cheap enough so that Jared could pay it with his own money.

“Yesterday you asked for your own job.. does that mean you’re not even going to work in the bar anymore?” Colin asked as they walked along, he had not said anything about it the night before but it had stuck onto his brain.

“I don’t know what would be best. I’ll stay working at the bar for the moment.. if there aren’t any complaints I can stay for the entire time. That would mean more money still, right? I’ll work for a lower pay than someone else would, right?” Jared asked and again Colin was reminded that Jared would do anything to get home.

“Right, love, right. Now let’s get you that room.” Colin answered a lot softer than before.
